This route is of modest length but includes some fairly stiff climbs. There are no refreshment facilities on the route but a modest diversion to Marshfield offers a selection of pubs.

Ride to Nettleton Green either via Toll Down Road at the west end of the village then left up Edgecorner Lane, or by Nettleton Road. At the triangle take the unsigned residential road to the west. In half a mile turn right at the T. The lane soon kinks left past the West Kington Stud then descends steeply to the village.

Cross the stream then take the hill to the right of the single-storey house (a former farrier’s forge), continue straight ahead at a minor cross-roads, past the chapel then the lane enters more open country and possibly more exposed to headwinds. A gradual uphill ensues for about a mile then dips down to a cross-roads. Turn left here for the described route, but if wishing to combine the ride with a pub lunch continue straight ahead until the A420 is reached. Turn right here but take care, it’s a fast and busy road though you soon fork left on to the old road to enter Marshfield. On the way back, after leaving the A420 fork right at a Y-junction which returns to the described route.

After the left turn, a 5-way junction is soon reached. Various alternatives are offered here, turn left for a slightly shorter run through Mountain Bower, regaining our route at the Fosse Way cross-roads, or for a longer option take the lane at the one 0’clock  position then at the outskirts of Upper Wraxall double back sharply left, cross the Fosse Way and follow the lane to North Wraxall. For the main route, continue straight over the 5-way crossing, ascend gently, cross the Fosse Way (give way), then left at the next T.

Just before North Wraxall church turn left, ascend gently then on the descent join the Fosse Way. The road dips and ascends sharply then go straight over the next cross-roads. After a straight and level section the lane narrows and descents steeply. Take care here not to let speed build up as it may be necessary to stop for oncoming traffic. We all know what a steep downhill to a stream means – a steep climb the other side!

After the climb away from the stream the Fosse Way levels then after a short downhill stretch turn left towards Nettleton Green. For a slightly longer alternative, remain on the Fosse Way till the next junction which also leads to Nettleton Green.

At the Green return to Burton using either of the outward alternatives.
