Happy New Year!

This is the first of a monthly series in which I’ll be reviewing the best of what I’ve read recently, and what to look forward to in forthcoming releases.

To kick things off, here are my favourite reads of 2020.

If you made a resolution to read more, but don’t know where to start check out my top ten tips on how to expand your reading.

Call for a Young Reviewer

Are there any young readers in Burton who’d like to recommend one book per month? You would need to write a couple of lines each month to say what it is you like about the book, and why you think others might like it. Contact me in the box below.

Burton Book Club

The Book Club has been in isolation since the start of the first lockdown. We are thinking of reconvening, with monthly meetings via Zoom on the third Monday of the month. If you are interested in joining the virtual Burton Book Club, please leave a comment below. In your comment, you might also like to include where you read, how you read (physical/eBooks/audio, do you have a favourite?), your favourite time for reading, and the hardest question of all, your favourite book of all time.

About me

I love books and I read across many genres. I’m a vlogger at World to Write, a guest host and reviewer at Novel Nights, a reviewer for NetGalley, a sifter for the Bath Short Story Award, and I also write novel-length and short fiction. I advocate supporting local independent bookshops.

Until next time, happy reading.

Hi Amanda, loved your article and want to join your book club!

Reading is an escape for me and my husband often sighs when I’ve got my head stuck in a good book as I’m unreachable and get grumpy if interrupted! (Not that I want to escape my husband!)

When do I read? Favourite time is early morning or when I can’t sleep at night. But any time really if I can get over the guilt of leaving jobs undone as I want to read another chapter.

How do I read? Although I do have a e book reader I also like to have the physical object in my hand except for the large tomes which make my thumbs hurt from holding them up. E readers have their place though and so easy to order books. I love the idea of audio ( who doesn’t like being read to? ) but am generally too mean to fork out for the audio version.

Like you I read across many genres but generally avoid horror. Love a bit of magical realism.

Favourite book of all time? So many good books out there I don’t think I can give an all time favourite. I have to say I’m very proud of myself finally reading Middlemarch, which has been on my bedside table for at least 15 years, always being pushed to the bottom of the pile. Finally achieved in the November lockdown. And I must say it was worth it.

I look forward to hearing more about Burton Book Club and hope the zoom takes off!

    Hi Sue,

    Hi Sue,

    Thanks for the response.

Like you, I’ve always thought of reading as a means of escape. I’m very pleased to see you are a fellow fan of magical realism, we’ll have to compare bookshelves when we meet – hopefully in the not too distant future.

    Amanda
